Easy Dog Bandana DIY

A totally Instagram worthy, super simple pup bandana project.

Who would have thought I'd be dragging out my sewing machine to stitch up cute bandanas for Alfie the pupstar. I've become a frequent flyer at at Spotlight and possibly need an intervention as I’ve accumulated a huge fabric stockpile. After spending time researching bandanas I settled on a scrunchie style and here is my free pattern and tutorial so you can make one too.

What is a scrunchie style dog bandana?

Unlike bandanas that slip over your pup's collar or are secured with ties, velcro or snaps, this bandana has elastic casing at the back, much like a hair scrunchie, and allows you to stretch the bandana easily over your puppy’s head.

Why I like the scrunchie style bandana:

  • It’s reversible so you can change it up depending on what look you want

  • Very easy to make using few supplies

  • Slips easily over the pup’s head without having to take their collar on and off

  • The top edge can be rolled up or down to adjust the length and look

  • No fiddly snaps or ties to wrangle with when trying to put it on a wriggly puppy

If you know how to sew a straight machine stitch, then you’ll be able to whip up one of these bandanas in no time. If you make a Hey Alfie bandana, I’d love to see it so make sure you tag us on Hey Alfie on Instagram or use #heyalfiemakes.

GRAB YOUR SUPPLIES AND LET'S GET TO IT!

What You Need

  • 8 inch square fabric x 2. I'm using Spotlight's Duck Cotton Dots fabric in rust and Daisy Printed Pinwale in ivory

  • 20mm wide woven elastic

  • Sewing machine

  • Sewing supplies - pins, matching thread, scissors and a rotary cutter (optional)

  • A cutting mat is handy but not essential

  • Cardstock to trace out your pattern

  • An iron. I used the Cricut Mini Easy Press

1. Cutting Your Dog Bandana Pieces

Cut a main piece from each fabric, placing pattern on the fold. Carefully iron a 1cm hem along the short side of each fabric main piece (Image 4). Cut a 7cm x 23cm fabric for your scrunchie strip.

2. Machine Stitching Your Dog Bandana

Machine stitch along each pressed hem of your two main pieces. With right sides together, stitch your two main pieces together along the top edge. Continue stitching the lower part of the main piece. Trim your edges and snip across the triangle point before flipping the bandana to the right side. Use scissors to carefully poke out the corners and press seams flat.

3. Stitching the Scrunchie Strip

With right sides together, stitch the long end of the scrunchie strip to form a tube. Using a loop turning tool or a whole lot of patience, turn your piece to the right side. Press seam.

Cut a 15cm strip of elastic and using a safety pin, thread the elastic through the scrunchie tube gathering as you go and securing each end with a pin to keep the elastic in place. Slip one edge into the bandana opening and stitch to secure. Repeat with the other end.

Finish by topstitching around the entire bandana.

Slip the bandana over your pup’s head, step back and give yourself a big clap. Now you have mastered one bandana you can stitch a whole wardrobe of them for your stylish pup. Mix it up with different fabrics, add some lace edging or even some pom pom trim for an on trend finish. And what did Alfie think of his new bandana? He didn’t try to shimmy his way out of his new fashion piece however he was not a cooperative model and within two mins he was covered in mud.
